Real Estate in Winter, Buyers Are Out There. Plus Local Buzz and Listings!

It's Winter, and what does that mean to those in Real Estate? Probably the number one questions I get is, "Should I list my house in the Winter?"  YES!  Let’s go over some real estate facts:

  1. Due to the Internet, people search for homes all year.  The Spring Season for Realtors® starts in January and February. Families that need to have children in school in September begin looking in late Winter, early Spring.  Weather plays a role, it may slow things down, but does not bring things to a halt.

This past Sunday I had scheduled an open house.  The weather was miserable and the seller and I toyed with the idea of cancelling.  The open house was all over the internet, so if one person showed up and saw that it was cancelled, I would have pissed them off.  I forged onward.  When I opened the door, five families were waiting outside to see the home.  I don’t know if any of them will buy this house, but I am so glad I was there.  Many of the folks at my open hous did complain that they went to other open houses and no one was there.

This past weekend, was not the first time. Two winters ago I sat in one of my open houses as the snow piled up.  Three families in SUVs came by.

People looking for homes, look for homes.  Not everyone does, but enough people go out and about in bad weather.   That said, please do not risk your safety to view a home.  If you want to see a home but can’t get to the open house or an appointment due to bad weather, call your Realtor.  If you are just beginning the search and don’t have a realtor – call me.   You can always call the listing broker to check on the status of an open house in questionable weather.

As the home owner, you have to be prepared for this.  Driveways and walkways need to be plowed and salted.  It is fine to request that people take off their shoes or wear booties in bad weather, or at any time.
